I've made around 8 of these so far. This is one of my earlier ones:
When my son was a baby, he loved to flip through books, and he also had a lot of family that there was no way he was going to keep track of on his own.
I had seen a "baby book" in the store - it was a book made out of plastic, with places to slip in photos printed out on paper. A great idea maybe, except as soon as my son tried to chew on it the pictures would be toast.
I wanted to make him a book, that he could look at - that would be SAFE for him to look at on his own if he wanted to keep it in his play area or take it to bed.
One day at church, I saw a woman who was playing with her baby. Her baby had a little army man doll, and the doll had an iron-on picture of the dad's face on it! Genius, I thought. Iron-on! That really makes it personal. And it's safe for their baby.
Well the fuses ignite, and I started planning.
After a few books, I finally have the process down - and the books are made out of iron-on pictures, fabric paint, various fabric, yarn, and cotton batting.
The best part? If your baby spits up on it, spills something on it, drops it somewhere filthy, or anything - you can wash it. I find it washes best on the delicate cycle in the wash machine, and then you hang it over a hanger to air dry.
Bad experiences: Washing it with other things, on a normal setting.
This happened to my son's book (the first one I made... I was such a n00b) and the agitator in the washer rubbed almost all the pictures off of the pages, as well as wrapped the book around the agitator.
This was the only time that happened.
